The Cayucos Community Art Gallery, a non-profit corporation, located at the entrance of the famous Cayucos Pier, has become a major tourist attraction for the 600,000 annual visitors to Cayucos. The Gallery features a variety of art forms reflecting the diversity of artistic talent in the community, drawings, paintings, photographs, ceramics, sculptures, notepaper, and cards. Although most of the art displayed is from the local area, artists outside the community are welcome to join the Cayucos Art Association, thus becoming eligible to display art in the Cayucos Community Art Gallery.
The Cayucos Art Association, a separate non-profit corporation, with 501(c)3 status, is committed to support art education at all levels and to encourage appreciation of the role of art in our lives and its importance to our society. It was founded in 1989 by artist living in Cayucos who recognized the artistic and creative potential of the area and envisioned a community center for creativity. Monthly meetings feature presentations of interest to the general public as well as to artists. Topics include painting with watercolor, acrylic and oils, photography, sculpture, silk painting and other fine art crafts, restoration, framing, marketing. The gallery provides a venue for artists in Cayucos to display their work and to gain knowledge and experience in this important role of the artist and opens a window for the community to view live art.
Another major feature from the beginning has been the commitment to the art program at the K-8 Cayucos Elementary School. This includes demonstrations and workshops by local artists, and provisions of art materials for the teachers trying to carry on an art program where both funds and time are limited. Most exciting is its new cooperation with the Cayucos Elementary School Board and the Parent Teacher Association in support of a teacher at the school whose one commitment is to teaching art. Awards are made annually by CAA for fine work at each grade level. In addition CAA has expanded an award program at Coast Union High School with scholarships offered to top students who will be pursuing a career in art. Student work from the classes K-8 and from the High School Scholarship program is celebrated by the Art Gallery with displays at each new show and at a springtime featured artist show.
All donations made to the Cayucos Art Association are tax deductible.
